Worship is Advocacy and Advocacy is Worship

 My first official meeting was an orientation session by the UN Ecumenical Women in the United Nations Chapel. United Church of Christ, Methodist, Episcopal, Presbyterian (USA) women from various nations met in person and by Zoom to tell their stories, sing, dance and celebrate womanhood. At the same  time, we acknowledged that there is much work to do in making the world a better place for women. One veteran attendee brought it all home when stressing the importance of telling our stories. “Until you tell your story, someone is literally dying”. So here it begins. This why I am here and I must screw up my courage and speak on behalf of women I don’t even know to create a place around the table for women  and girls.  I will do my best to make your story count!

 TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2023 Today, we drove from Phoenix to the US/Mexico border at Douglas, AZ.   The drive between Phoenix and Tucson was familiar, having driven many times when I worked for the Presbytery de Cristo and to see my daughter when she was a student at the University of Arizona. We drove past the Gila River Reservation, where many dear friends live, we passed through Tucson where I had circulated with natural born US citizens, with Native American citizens, with naturalized citizens, with undocumented citizens- with people. Tucson is a beautiful place 122 miles north of the border.  A university town, there is a rich diversity of cultures, especially Mexican and US, with amazing restaurants, museums, tourist attractions and shopping. The Journey begins

 When I was growing up in the West Texas Panhandle, we regularly drove past a sign on a main thoroughfare that read "Get US Out! The Godless U.N." To a young child, that seemed like it must be really bad. In school, I learned the history of the U.N. and how it was formed after WWII to bring countries together and work to work toward peace.  "What's so Godless about that?", I thought.  Link for official explanation Now I get to learn for myself!  I embark on March 3 to New York City for two weeks as a commissioner to the annual Commission on the Status of Women.  I will be there under the auspices of the Presbyterian Women, who have a seat around the table.  This year's focus is on Technology. HOPE

 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2023 It's time to leave the border. I'm exhausted. Not only physically, but psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually. Our last venture was a walk along the Agua Prieta side of the wall followed by a farewell to Joca, who had been our guide throughout. Remember the desolation on the US side? Not here.  Bright colors. Images of animals that cannot be contained by a man-made barrier- hummingbirds, snakes, sparrows, eagles, butterflies.   And HOPE.  We can't shut out HOPE.
